What is VAT and how does it work in Spain?

VAT (Value Added Tax) is an indirect tax applied to the consumption of goods and services in Spain. Our VAT calculator allows you to calculate VAT quickly, both to add VAT to a price and to remove VAT from a total. It's the perfect tool for freelancers, businesses and individuals who need to calculate VAT instantly.

How to calculate VAT on a price?

To add VAT, multiply the price without VAT by (1 + percentage/100). For example, with 21% VAT: €100 × 1.21 = €121. To remove VAT, divide the total price by (1 + percentage/100). For example: €121 ÷ 1.21 = €100. Our VAT calculator does these calculations automatically and allows you to choose between the three types of VAT in Spain: 21% (standard), 10% (reduced) and 4% (super reduced).

Formulas to calculate VAT

Add VAT: Price without VAT × (1 + VAT/100) = Price with VAT. Example with 21%: 100 × 1.21 = €121. Remove VAT: Price with VAT ÷ (1 + VAT/100) = Price without VAT. Example: 121 ÷ 1.21 = €100. Calculate VAT only: Price without VAT × (VAT/100). Example: 100 × 0.21 = €21. The three types of VAT in force in Spain are: 21% (standard for most products), 10% (reduced for food, hospitality, culture) and 4% (super reduced for basic necessities such as bread, milk, medicines).

Frequently Asked Questions

What formula is used to calculate VAT?
To add VAT: Price without VAT × (1 + VAT type in decimal). Example with 21%: 100 × 1.21 = €121. To remove VAT: Price with VAT ÷ (1 + VAT type in decimal). Example: 121 ÷ 1.21 = €100. Our calculator applies these formulas automatically depending on the mode you choose.
How do you add VAT to a price?
To add VAT, multiply the base price by (1 + VAT percentage/100). For example, with 21% VAT: €100 × 1.21 = €121 (final price). You can also calculate only the VAT by multiplying the price by the percentage: 100 × 0.21 = €21. Use our VAT calculator to get the result instantly.
How do you remove VAT from a price with VAT included?
To remove VAT, divide the total price by (1 + VAT/100). With 21% VAT, you would divide by 1.21. Example: €121 ÷ 1.21 = €100 (price without VAT). The VAT would be 121 - 100 = €21. Our calculator does this calculation automatically when you select 'Remove VAT' mode.
How many types of VAT exist in Spain?
In Spain there are three types of VAT in force in 2026: standard VAT (21%) which applies by default to most products and services, reduced VAT (10%) for food, hospitality, culture and housing, and super reduced VAT (4%) for basic necessities such as bread, milk, fruits, books and medicines.
How much is 21% VAT?
21% VAT is the percentage that applies to the base price. Examples: 21% of €100 is €21, 21% of €500 is €105, 21% of €1,000 is €210. To calculate the final price, add the VAT to the base price: 100 + 21 = €121.
How to calculate 10% or 4% VAT?
Use the same formula as with 21%. For 10%: €100 × 1.10 = €110 (price with VAT). For 4%: €100 × 1.04 = €104 (price with VAT). If you want to remove 10% VAT: divide by 1.10. For 4%: divide by 1.04. Our calculator allows you to choose between the three types of VAT.
What products are exempt from VAT?
VAT exempt: medical and health services, regulated education (schools, universities), insurance and financial services (loans, mortgages), rental of habitual residence, non-profit social services, universal postal services by Correos, and certain non-commercial cultural and sports activities.
How to know if a price includes VAT?
Unless otherwise stated, the consumer price usually includes VAT. On invoices to companies or freelancers, the amount without VAT and VAT are normally shown separately. Look at the label or invoice: if it says 'VAT included' or only one price appears, it already has VAT. If it says '+ VAT' or 'VAT not included', you will have to add it.
